Ojo Guareña by Edurne Rubio (Spain/Belgium) – 52 min

In this film, we join a group of speleologists entering a gigantic cave in Spain. We hardly see the contours of the space but we do hear drops of water and the echoes of human footsteps that for centuries, have been recreating the shape of the cave. In Ojo Guareña, Rubio punctuates this soundscape with memories of the speleologists and revolutionary songs, denouncing Franco’s dictatorship.

The film illustrates how a confined space of darkness, silence and solitude can paradoxically become a space of freedom. Ojo Guareña is the film version of the piece Light Years Away, winner of BE FESTIVAL 2019.

Filmmaker Edurne Rubio will be in conversation with Ian Francis (Flatpack Festival) on 14 May 17:30 UK time. More info here.

Visual artist Edurne Rubio’s practice shifts between different contexts and formats such as performances, films and sound, which she uses to create projects portraying situations where tension is built up between what we see and what we hear, between present, memory and imagination.
